The lecture presents an overview of the book ‘China’s Economic Culture: The Ritual Order of State and Markets’. China's spectacular rise challenges established economic models, both at the national level, with the concept of "state capitalism", and at the firm level, with the notion of indigenous "Chinese management practices". However, both Chinese and Western observers emphasise the transitional nature of the reforms, thereby leaving open the question as to whether China's reform process is really a fast catch-up process, with ultimate convergence to global standards, or something different. This book, by a leading economist and sinologist, argues that "culture" is an exceptionally useful tool to help understand fully the current picture of the Chinese economy. Drawing on a range of disciplines including social psychology, cognitive sciences, institutional economics and Chinese studies, the book examines long-run path dependencies and cultural legacies, and shows how these contribute crucially to the current cultural construction of economic systems, business organisations and patterns of embedding the economy into society and politics.

本次讲座将由何梦笔教授介绍其新著《中国的经济文化：国家和市场的仪式秩序》。中国的经济腾飞以国家层面的“国家资本主义”概念和公司层面的“中国管理实践”本土观念挑战了既有的经济模型。然而，中国和西方的观察家都强调该变革的过渡性，这便需要回答中国的改革进程是否真的是一个快速追赶的过程，以最终达到全球标准或者新的标准。作为杰出的经济学家和汉学家，本书的作者认为“文化”是深入理解当前中国经济图景极为有用的工具。通过社会心理学、认知科学、制度经济学和中国研究等跨学科的研究，本书探讨了长期的路径依赖和文化遗产，进而展示了这些是如何对当前经济体系和商业组织的文化建设，以及经济嵌入社会和政治的模式产生决定性影响的。

讲者简介：

Carsten Herrmann-Pillath (Chinese name: 何梦笔) is an economist and philosopher who is currently Professor and Permanent Fellow at the Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies, University of Erfurt, Germany. After completing education in economics, linguistics and classical Chinese studies at the University of Cologne, between 1992 and 2016 he assumed professorships and chairs in economics, evolutionary/institutional economics and Chinese economic studies at Duisburg University, Witten/Herdecke University and Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, Germany. His major fields of research are economics and philosophy, institutional change and economic development, international economics and Chinese economic studies.

何梦笔（Carsten Herrmann-Pillath），经济学家、哲学家，德国埃尔福特大学马克斯·韦伯文化与社会高级研究中心终身教授。早年就读于德国科隆大学，从事经济学、语言学和古典中国研究，自1992年始他先后从杜伊斯堡大学、维藤／海德克大学和法兰克福金融与管理学院获得经济学、演化／制度经济学和中国经济研究的教授职衔和席位。他的研究领域广泛，主要涉及经济学和哲学、制度变迁和经济发展、国际经济和中国经济研究。

His publications include 300+ academic papers and 16 books, covering a wide cross-disciplinary range in economics, the humanities and the sciences, including recently: Journal of Economic Methodology, Journal of Comparative Economics, Journal of Evolutionary Economics, European Economic Review, Copenhagen Journal of Asian Studies, Schmollers Jahrbuch, European Journal of Political Economy, Ecological Economics and Entropy. In 1997, together with the late Chen Jiyuan 陈吉元, he edited the book series 当代中国的村庄与村落文化丛书 . His magnum opus on China was published in 2016, building on three decades of research into culture and political economy of China: China’s Economic Culture: The Ritual Order of State and Markets (Routledge). He is currently working on a ‘critical theory of the economy’, integrating cutting edge developments in economics with recent advances in the philosophy of the social sciences.
