Summary of Academic Reports by Teachers and Students from National University of Singapore

On February 29, 2024, an academic workshop was held among some teachers and postgraduate students from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the National University of Singapore (NUS) and those from the Department of Sociology at Tsinghua University at Conference Room 109 of Xiong Zhixing Building. The workshop was opened by Prof. Wang Tianfu from the Department of Sociology at Tsinghua University, with the presentations appraised by professors Du Yue and Sun Xiulin.

Reports in Session I were on "Relationships in Daily Life, Relocation and Inheritance".

Firstly, Prof. Ho Kong Chong from NUS shared the study "Informal Partnerships at the Neighbourhood Level: With a Little Help from My Friends".

Next, Prof. Vincent Chua delivered a report titled "Two Singapores: Coming Apart at the Seams of Class and the Call to Network Diversity", which explored the phenomenon of class segregation in social networks of Singapore.After that, Prof. Daniel PS Goh from NUS gave a report titled "The Cultural Translations of Sun Yatsen Memorials in the Remaking of Hong Kong, Penang and Singapore as Heritage Cities".

Reports in Session II were on "Demographic Changes in China and Singapore".

This session began with a presentation by Prof. Feng Qiushi from NUS on his study "The incoming boom of institutional care in China", which aimed to explore the development trends and characteristics of geriatric care institutions in China over the past decades, with a view to realizing effective management of such institutions.

Prof. Mu Zheng gave a report entitled "Political Efficacy and Fertility Intentions: A Survey Experiment Study in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore".

This was followed by a report by Mo Yan, a student from NUS, on her study "Technological Engagement Among Older Adults in Singapore: A Latent Class Analysis".

Reports in Session III were on "Renting, Commuting and Planning".

Gao Ding from NUS delivered a report entitled "Rental biopolitics: housing financialization and the production of the queer subject".

Later, Lee Chen En from NUS presented a study entitled "Bridging The Causeways: How Online Communities Mitigate Commuting Pressures and Connect Malaysians in Singapore".

Ho Zhi Wei from NUS gave a report entitled "Modelling Singapore through Global Urban Agendas".

The workshop came to an end with heated discussions and loud applause. Moving ahead, the Department of Sociology at Tsinghua University and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, NUS will continue to maintain friendly exchanges and explore cutting-edge issues in such fields as urban governance and population structure together, so as to develop new perspectives and open up new horizons in interaction and cooperation.
