Home > About > IntroductionEstablished in 1926, the Department of Sociology at Tsinghua University boasts a brilliant and splendid history. At that time, the Department featured many prominent faculty members, including Da CHEN (the founding dean), Guangdan PAN, Jingchao WU, Jinghan LI and S. M. Shitokogoroff, as well as a galaxy of talented students, such as Hsiao-Tung FEI and Fang YUAN. The Department of Sociology at Tsinghua was abolished during a nationwide restructuring of institutes of higher education in 1952. In May 2000, the Department of Sociology at Tsinghua University was officially resumed under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Prof. Qiang LI was the first dean of the restored Department. Since its restoration, the Department has made important progress in both discipline construction and social research and has gone ahead of its domestic counterparts in China's national discipline evaluation over the years. In recent years, the Department has always been among the top three sociology programs in the Chinese Mainland according to international academic assessment. At a time when China is undergoing violent social transformation, the sociological tradition of the old Tsinghua is still a source of valuable spiritual wealth for the new Tsinghua and China's sociological circles. The reconstruction and development of the Department of Sociology at Tsinghua is also committed to allowing the academic legacy of sociology at the old Tsinghua to shine again under new circumstances. The Department has 19 faculty members, including 11 professors (including 1 adjunct professor) and 8 associate professors. Among them, one has been included in the National Talent Program, five in the National Young Talent Program, and two in the National Ten Thousand Talent Program for Young Top-Notch Talents; one is the vice-president of the Chinese Sociological Association (CSA), and four are the heads of several sociology committees of CSA. The Department of Sociology at Tsinghua University is a leader in China in the fields of urban sociology, sociology of transition, sociology of science and historical sociology, while actively developing emerging disciplines such as big data and computational sociology, artificial intelligence and social governance, and spatial sociology. The Department has established several research centers, including the Center for Aging Society, the Center for Medical Sociology, the Center for Anthropology and Ethnology, the Center for the Study of Contemporary China (CSCC), the Center for Social Survey and Research, the Center for Globalization Studies, the Research Center of County Governance, the Center for Social Network Research, the Community Revitalization Research Center (CRRC), and the Society & Finance Center (SFC). The Department's journal, Tsinghua Sociological Review (which has been included in CSSCI), has won the title of "National Excellent Academic Journal" many times, and has become an important academic journal with a strong presence in sociology. The Department of Sociology at Tsinghua University attaches great importance to talent cultivation. It has scored notable successes in teaching reforms and has won the National Teaching Achievement Award many times. Graduates from the Department have exerted a significant social influence in all walks of life. Sociology shone the history of Tsinghua in the past and is now setting sail on a new journey at Tsinghua, with a view to reshaping its glory.
